The Great Depression
The Great Depression was a very hard time for most people in America. It all started when the Stock Marcket started to crash, and one of those dreadful days was "Black Tuesday." Many people lost lots of money on this day and the economy just kept getting worse from there. Another reason for the Great Depression was many factories made surpluses of things, and the production slowed down, so many people were laid off.
Many people believe that WWII was one of the main reasons that the depression ended. I think it was, because when the war started production started. Production started, because we needed to get supplies to soldiers from our country, and other countries. In 1933 president Roosevelt was inaugurated. He started to come up with a plan called the New Deal. The New Deal was a plan to help Americans out of the depression. It gave young men jobs, and helped them earn money for their families.
Many people started to see if they could go out west and see if they could farm to make more money. This was a good idea at first, but people started to run out of land. Once people started to run out of land they started to cut down trees and soon all the land was just flat. Now this was good at first, but then all the good soil was gone and they were left with dusty dirt. Since this land did not have trees to block the fast wind the wind would blow the dust everywhere, and the people living there had no place to go. This area became known as the Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl affected southern plains very badly. The soil was bad and there was really no place to grow crops. Since the land would not grow crops the farmers could not make any money for their families needs. I think the setting for To Kill a Mockingbird will be in a small poor town, and people with money probably will not be liked very much.
